Miss Universe Contest Heads for Grand Finale

The 80 Miss Universe contestants will take part in the Presentation Show in the Tuesday evening, featuring swimwear and gown contests.

At the Crown Convention Center in Nha trang the jury will choose 15 contestants for the finale next Monday. But their names will only be announced on that day.

The jury is comprised of Thanh Nien newspaper editor-in-chief Nguyen Cong Khe, Nguyen Quoc Cuong, deputy chairman of the Hoan Cau Company, Rosalina Tran Lydster, co-designer of the 2008 Miss Universe crown, and Dean McFlike, vice president of NBC primetime special project.

Come the final, then jury will nominate 10 winners who will each get US$500 and a Rogaska crystal trophy.

Grand finale

The 2008 Miss Universe contest itself will feature swimwear, dress, and interview rounds.

The winner will get a year-long stipend and will have to travel around the world with the Miss Universe Organization’s personal manager, sponsors, charitable partners, and others. She will get to wear a crown designed and made by Phu Nhuan Jewelry Company (PNJ) at a cost of $120,000. It is made of 18K gold and encrusted with more than 1,000 gemstones. The 2008 Miss Universe will get a replica worth $30,000, also created by PNJ.

The first runner-up will get a cash prize of $3,000, the second runner-up $2,000, while the two coming after the second runner-up $1,000 each.

The US television channel NBC's poll for Best in Traditional Costume has been launched at www.nbc.com/Miss_Universe_2008. It is the only title at the pageant to be decided by the public. The winner, to be announced on the final day, will get $1,000 and a Rogaska crystal trophy.

The jury for the Miss Universe pageant next Monday will include Miss Universe 2004 Jennifer Hawkins, famous NBC actress Nadine Velazquez, Donald Trump Jr, son of the property mogul, Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli, and hair designer Louis Licari. The rest of the 12-member jury will be named soon.
